This is a critique of the mainstream music industry, using the metaphor of Ouroboros, the self devouring serpent. In particular, it deals with the ignorance, even fear, of technology which ensured a failure to create and embrace a digital distribution model. Recognising the opportunity, others have since stepped in and transformed the business. In frustration at their increasing lack of control, the old established powers lashed out, seeing criminals where there are merely potential customers ready to be served.

The nature of the Internet ensures that the filters which bar entry of unapproved music on the usual mediums of terrestrial radio and TV are rendered utterly ineffective. Exposure is now a much more level playing field. This, combined with a continued stagnation in the music promoted by the old guard, has drastically altered the spread of sales. Those few artists presented as loved by the majority, when it is merely the largest minority, have seen a steep decline. Yet overall sales remain strong. The Long Tail fattens.

With the internal machinations of these giants now transparent for those who wish to look, power shifts to the artist and the diversity of music stretches ever outward.
